Mary Rose School Specialist Sports College – Definitely can do anything!
On Thursday 16th October, we celebrated our official opening as a Specialist Sports College. Ade Adepitan, GB Para Olympian Basketball player returned to Mary Rose School to help us to celebrate our new status and to run master classes in Basketball.
A whole day of sporting opportunities for all our pupils was organised by Tracey Clarke, Director of Specialisms along with the PE team and Mary Rose staff. Members of the local community and local businesses also supported the day, by either leading activities or supporting the pupils.
Pupils had the chance to take part in Basketball master classes with Ade as well as Sherborne Developmental Movement, Touch Therapy, Rebound Therapy, Water Aerobics, Martial Arts to name just a few.
Many guests joined the school in its celebrations including the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Councillor Eleanor Scott, Rear Admiral John Lippiett, Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust, The Deputy Governor and staff from Kingston Prison, members of Portsmouth County Council and numbers of people representing local businesses and charitable organisations. They all watched in awe as pupils walked in procession across the front of the school to assemble together for the opening ceremony.
Jade Smith and Bradley Ryder, two of Portsmouth’s official Young Ambassadors for the 2012 Olympics held the Opening Ring as Ade shot a Basketball through the middle – right on target.
The day was a huge success. The pupils entered wholeheartedly into the activities with great big smiles on their faces. The ultimate accolade was when staff and pupils asked if they could have a similar day again next year!
