Mary Rose School has only been a Specialist Sports College for just over 2 weeks, yet has already taken a leading role in Portsmouth’s closing ceremony for the Paralympics in Beijing. Directors from both Mary Rose and Priory Sports Colleges and Madeleine Campbell (PDM) for the Portsmouth SSCO programme came together just last week to put together a fun filled programme of activities that pupils from across Portsmouth could take part in, including Boccia, Wheelchair Basketball, Athletics and Tennis.
Young Sports Leaders from both Sports Colleges, with the support of their staff, worked closely with pupils from local primary schools to ensure that the pupils had the opportunity to try out a variety of sports. Mary Rose Sports Leaders were responsible for Poly bat, Boccia, Wheelchair Basketball and New Age Kurling. They organised their kit, taking the young pupils through the rules and regulations of their sports and how to perform different skills. There was an incredible number of pupils in the Guildhall square who were really enjoying themselves and experiencing a wide range of activities that they had never tried or even knew existed.
Well done to our first Sports College Sports Leaders – Jade Smith, Jodie Sanders, Graham Culpin, Charlie Stevens, Lewis Street, Hannah Thompson and Bradley Ryder.
This is just the start of the activities that the Sports College will be involved in and the partnership work that will be happening with the (School Sports Co-ordinator) SSCO programme and Priory Sports College.
