On Friday 16th January a group of pupils from Key Stage 3 went to the Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth to take part in a workshop with professional artist, Effie Coe. The workshop was a prize that some of the pupils had won in an Art competition held by the gallery last year.
The pupils explored the gallery using their ‘looking devices’ and by using video cameras. They spent time in the main gallery, where it was very dark, exploring the exhibition ‘Solstice’ which uses video recordings and music to depict the longest and shortest days of the year. They did this through different activities including looking, listening and playing their own music inspired by the piece.
After a short break to enjoy some hot chocolate – with extra marshmallows! The pupils first practiced drawing with their eyes closed, then went back into the gallery to draw their own picture inspired by ‘Solstice’, in the dark. The pupils worked very hard and thoroughly enjoyed the activity, needing a bit of persuasion to stop, even for lunch! They produced some great art work, all very different, and were able to identify the different elements of ‘Solstice’ which had inspired their own work. At the end of the workshop all of the pupils agreed that their day had been ‘fantastic’. We are looking forward to returning for another workshop in the near future.
