Who are we?
Mary Rose School is a Special School for young people aged 2-19 with severe learning disabilities. Our service, commissioned by Portsmouth LA, offers support to Portsmouth children in mainstream and other special schools to allow them the same learning opportunities as their peers.
What do we do?
We offer a range of targeted services to other schools. The range of services we provide is outlined on our overview diagram. These include ‘outreach’, pupil and staff support, specialist advice and training. Targeted areas include:
- ASD 11-16
- Physical Disabilities 5-16
- Learning disabilities 11-16
- Severe and complex learning disabilities 5-16
How do you access our service?
Access to the service is through the Inclusion Support Panel (ISP). If you have a young person in your school who you believe would benefit from this service then you should apply to ISP. Our contact details are available here.

Resourcing:

- Opportunities to see resources/systems in use through focussed visits to the school

Training:
- School-based training (placement) (eg NVQ/ BTEC/ ITT)
- Strategic leadership approaches to meeting SEN (Inclusion, ECM agenda)
- Consultancy skills training for outreach staff
- School based SEN training teachers and TAs (CPD) (accredited – college/ university linked)
- Running joint training with other LA/ agency services
- Parent/ carer courses (behaviour; communication)
- CPD linked to workforce reform (future role agenda)
- Joint delivery of specialised training – therapies (SALT, OT, Physio); communication (PECS, Makaton)
- Use of specialist equipment/ systems (TEACCH)
SEN Provision:
- Long term placement (core)
- Dual placement (part-time)
- Short-term intervention (‘in-reach’)
- Assessment and programme planning placements (time limited)
- Provision for pupils placed elsewhere (through outreach/ training/ resourcing)
- Transition support (time limited)
- Needs related Specialisms (eg PD, ASD, LD (11-19)
- Curriculum Specialisms specifically PE & ICT
- Flexible in the provision made (able to adapt to meet changing needs)
- Regional/ sub-regional provision
Service Provider:
- Outreach to pupils in mainstream (assessment; modelling teaching; coaching; joint working; support programmes; planning; sharing practice; resources)
- Outreach support/advice to mainstream staff (teachers, TAs)
- Staff exchanges, dual/ shared staffing across schools
- Networking (including other service providers)
- Running support/ focus group for staff/ parents
- Partnership work with other providers (pre-school/ mainstream SENCos & resource provision/FE)
- School/ settings self-review partnership working in SEN
- Whole school curriculum access and planning (shared working)
- Services to parents/ carers
- Base provision for other services (therapy, therapeutic, social, parent partnership)
- Contribution to the LA strategic role
