O2 Gymnasts

On Tuesday Discovery class had the fantastic opportunity to go to the O2 Arena to see the international men’s artistic gymnastics Olympic qualifying event. The pupils were very excited and loved the whole experience. They were treated like royalty, being led to one of the executive boxes to view the spectacle. PE in the Community

A group of students in the 6th Form have been accessing community facilities as part of their PE in the Community module.
In September the students had two lessons at the Portsmouth Golf Centre. Not only did they have a great tutor there but the Golf Centre also kindly subsidised the lessons. The students thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and showed real improvement over the two lessons. They continued to practise their skills in the local park for the rest of the half term.

Discovery Class at UKSA

What a glorious week Discovery Class had at UKSA sailing on the Isle of Wight. We went on the last week of September and hit the Indian Summer. There were many activities pupils were able to participate in and they certainly all joined in fully. On our first day we went to the onsite pool and experienced wearing buoyancy aids for the first time, as well as building water confidence. Last Friday was a very special day in Britannia Class. It was the day of our sponsored walk in aid of raising money for children at the school to go on school holidays. This half term the classes of Mary Rose School took part in its first intra class wheelchair football tournament. Penguin, Britannia and Wimbledon classes were involved.
The preparation for this event started after Christmas with all three class learning about Wheelchair football in their PE lessons. On Saturday 5th February our squad of athletes took part in the Indoor Athletics National Final held at the Mountbatten Leisure Centre, Portsmouth. Athletics squads from all over the country took part in the event as far away as Bath. All in all there were 200 competitors. A SPORTS project aims to give troubled young people a chance in life at the same time as helping disabled children.
The idea behind the Respectability scheme is for ‘disruptive’ boys and girls in Portsmouth to learn about those suffering from profound disabilities through sport.

We were really excited to welcome Cedars School to Mary Rose for our annual New Age Kurling match.
Cedars arrived for a 10:30 start and we had a group warm up in which we really enjoyed meeting our new friends!
We then had some time to practice our Kurling skills in a circuit before lunchtime.

A team of ten pupils, well supported by parents and staff, took part in this years Special Olympics at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

In preparation for the National Boccia Championships, Mervyn Turk, a GB Boccia coach came into school to train the two young people selected to represent our school in Sheffield at the weekend.

Each year until 2012 School Sport Partnerships across England will recruit two young people to take on the role of Young Ambassador for two years. The first football match of the season was a resounding success for the Mary Rose School football team. Our intrepid footballers played against Cedars School on September 18th and won the game by 12 goals to 2.

On Friday four teams (2 Boccia and 2 New Age Kurling) went to Aldershot to take part in the Parallel Games.
One of our Boccia teams just missed out on victory, coming second, and our other Boccia team won the play-off match to be placed third. Unfortunately, we didn't fare quite so well in the New Age Kurling part of the tournament.
