Trips And Visits

At Mary Rose School we are very keen for our pupils to go out into the community to extend their learning and PE is no exception. Pupils go offsite to use a wide range of sporting facilities including swimming pools, outdoor centres and fitness facilities.

Swimming – Our pupils visit Victoria swimming baths and also use the pool at Waterlooville leisure centre on a regular basis. Pupils are able to integrate with members of the general public at both facilities to further develop their communication and independence skills.

Outdoor Education – The Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Education centre at Hamble provides an ideal setting for pupils to take part in a variety of activities such as Archery, Climbing, Boating and Horse Riding. The centre is designed for people with disabilities and all activities and facilities are fully accessible.

Fitness – The Gym and fitness suite at Highbury College is used by our pupils in Key Stage 4 and the 6th Form. Adapted equipment is available to ensure all pupils can access weight training and cardio-vascular exercise.

Ten Pin Bowling – The AMF bowling alley is used by Key Stage 4 option groups. Pupils enjoy using the adapted equipment which allows all pupils the opportunity to take part and be successful.

Residential Trips - these are an important part of a child’s development and a huge step towards independence. In 2006/7 we are offering two residential visits for pupils in Key Stages 3 & 4. We hope to extend this next year to offer two further residentials, one for 6th form and one for primary pupils.

The Calvert Trust – This purpose built centre offers outdoor and adventurous activities for young people with disabilities. The centre is on Exmoor in Devon. We take pupils for a 7 day residential in June. Activities include horse riding, climbing, abseiling and orienteering. The accommodation consists of twin and triple bedded rooms with fully accessible facilities. The visit is all inclusive with all activities and food being included in the cost.

Little Canada – This is a PGL run centre on the Isle of Wright. Pupils stay in log cabins which have en suite facilities. The activities on offer include high ropes, abseiling, quad biking, problem solving, canoeing, climbing, aeroball, zip wire and “the matrix”. This year we will be visiting for five days in May with Key Stage 4 pupils.
