We are currently in the process of applying for Sports College Status. Our application is due to be submitted in October.
What is Sports College Status?
- It is part of the Specialist schools Programme, which is an important part of the Government’s drive to raise standards in education.
- The status develops the school’s strengths and character in sport.
- It raises standards in sport in the school through the development of sporting provision.
- It endeavours to raise standards of achievement in all areas of the curriculum through sporting activity.
- It ensures that the local community benefits from links with the school and it’s sporting facilities.
- It strengthens links between the school, businesses, industry, sporting bodies and the local community.
Why do we want to get Sports College Status?
- The status will bring with it significant funding for the school
- It will help us to raise attainment levels for all pupils across the curriculum
- If will sharpen our focus on health and wellbeing
What will this allow us to do as a Sports College?
- Develop the range of sporting opportunities for ALL of our pupils including those with the most complex needs.
Raise the attainment of Mary Rose pupils so that participation in elite sport can become a reality for some. - Create a structure that will enable people with learning disabilities to participate in sport throughout their lives.
- Develop a coaching an officiating structure for inclusive sports with national accreditation.
- Identify and develop areas of the curriculum that can be delivered through the medium of sport.
- Enhance the sporting opportunities for people with disabilities in the local community.
- Use sport to engage members of the community most at risk of offending or re-offending to reduce crime rates.
- Develop existing links with mainstream schools and colleges.
